Solid State Storage Symposium – Cache or Tier Panel Discussion | The Storage Architect

As part of last week’s Storage Field Day event, at the Solid State Storage Symposium I moderated a panel entitled “Solid State – Simply a big cache or a real storage tier?”  The full brief was as follows:

HansDeLeenheer: Kaminario - a Solid State startup worth following

Last week I was invited as a delegate at Storage Field Day one. On Wednesday there was an open symposium on the SSD/Flash theme (Solid State Storage Symposium), Thursday and Friday were 2 days of 4 to 5 two hour presentations by some vendors to 12 independent storage specialists. Most of the vendors we spoke to were startups, because it is these people that push the market with new ideas and solutions without the boundaries of legacy hardware/software (and internal politics). One of these startups is Kaminario.

Using Pure Flash or Cache for VDI

Over the last couple of days of Storage Field Day the conversation of Flash vs Cache has been discussed multiple times. Flash vs Cache is an interesting topic for VDI. Do you want to put your whole work load into Flash or use Flash as a Cache and balance the workload with traditional hard drives?

Kaminario, scale out on flash! - Juku

Kaminario was our first host, Kaminario is a relatively new play in the flash array market, being founded in 2008, Dani Golan, Founder and CEO of the company, presented the company and their product to #SFD1 audience in an engaging and technical manner, he initially laid out what, I believe, everybody knows already: flash needs a completely new architecture at the storage array side, otherwise regular legacy arrays are simply not able to leverage the speeds and low latencies of flash.

Does Backup and Recovery work with SLA? Maybe it should. | Technically Speaking

Data backup and protection is definitely important, but it is also a chore.  Managing backup and ensuring that the details of your organizations day to day operations are not only backed up, but available for restoration at a moments notice is hard work.  Keeping in mind that your organization’s definition of a “moment” could be quite different from the company right across the street.  But rest assured, backup or restore is one of the most important things likely going on in their IT department too.

How Drobo brings big storage to Small and Medium Business | Technically Speaking

Drobo is doing some very interesting things.  They are a storage company with a focus on the small and medium business.  I realize that there are many technologies hoping to put out their product and bring the SMB market along for the ride, this is definitely not somewhere Drobo seems to be.

How to Build a Solid State Storage Array – Technical Deep Dive

While attended the April 2012 Solid State Storage Symposium in San Jose I had the opportunity to host a panel of experts and technologists from four of the leading solid state storage array vendors.  The panel discussed how to design and architect storage arrays built around solid state storage technologies.  Some of the questions included….

Drobo, the other SAN. - Juku

Drobo was the talk of the town a few years ago when their first 4-bay RAID array stunned the home storage enthusiasts with their BeyondRAID technology, that enabled a very smart use of those drives laying around the house giving the user the power to mix & match different drive sizes using a technology once found only on high-end storage arrays.

ReRAM to the rescue | RayOnStorage Blog

I was at the Solid State Storage Symposium a couple of weeks ago where Robin Harris (StorageMojo) gave the keynote presentation. In his talk, Robin mentioned a new technology on the horizon which holds the promise of replacing DRAM, SRAM and NAND called resistive random access memory (ReRAM or RRAM).

Pure Storage FlashArray: Ooooooh yeh! – Technical Deep Dive

Today Pure Storage announced a pretty cool new all flash storage array, the Pure Storage FlashArray.  An interesting startup playing in an interesting and massively disruptive area of technology.  This post guts under the hood of the Pure Storage FlashArray and explains exactly why solid state storage technologies are literally changing the rules when it comes to storage array design.
